‘When we succeed in giving every child the best start in their early years, we give them what they need today.  We also set them up with every chance of success tomorrow.’  (Development Matters 2022)

Foundation Stage

At English Martyrs’ we greatly value the importance of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in providing a secure foundation for future learning and development.

Our provision offers the necessary balance of teacher-led input and ‘child-initiated’ learning. We create a nurturing, stimulating environment in the school indoor and outdoor learning areas for children to play, engage in enquiry, discovery, and reflection. We want our children to be confident in expressing their ideas, are independent and keen to explore the world around them. It is here in reception that we set down the roots of our curriculum approach at English Martyrs’.

It is vital that children are encouraged to think and talk about what they are learning, using the language of learning even at this young age. This early approach to ‘metacognition’ enables our children to see themselves as learners and develop a love of learning! It is through our topics and lively learning environment, that we place our children at the heart of everything we do!
