RED: To Know You More Clearly
We are currently in a trial period of the new Religious Education Directory (RED) Curriculum from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.
Our curriculum follows the six-branch model of the RED Model Curriculum, one branch for each term, and is structured to align with the Liturgical Year. The branches are:
Advent 1 – Creation and Covenant
Advent 2 – Prophecy and Promise
Lent 1 – Galilee to Jerusalem
Lent 2 – Desert to Garden
Pentecost 1 – To the Ends of the Earth
Pentecost 2 – Dialogue and Encounter
Ways of Knowing: Understand, Discern, Respond
The three ways of knowing are ‘understand’, ‘discern’, and ‘respond’, and describe the skills that pupils develop as they progress through the religious education curriculum. These are where our driver words come from and replace the previous ‘ATs’.

Knowledge Lenses
Knowledge lenses set out the object of study for pupils; they indicate what should be known by the end of each age-phase. They are referred to as lenses, since they are the things we are looking at and they divide the content of the programme of study into four systematic subsections for the study of Catholicism and two additional lenses for the study of religions and worldviews, which together comprise the six knowledge lenses. These are: hear, believe, celebrate, and live (the study of the Catholic religion), dialogue, and encounter (the study of other religions and worldviews).

Other World Faiths
At English Martyrs’, we recognise that exploring Other World Faiths is crucial to building our understanding, tolerance and respect for others. This is part of out British Values, but also important to our own faith, that we love all of God’s people. Over the course of the year, we explore:

Throughout the year, children will learn about different aspects of Other World Faiths through their RE work. Each year group will focus on a different aspect. These are:
Reception – Traditional clothing and stories
Y1 – Special Days and Rituals
Y2 – Prayer Traditions
Y3 – Places of Worship
Y4 – Holy Books
Y5 – Beliefs and Festivals
Y6 – Values and Belonging
Lessons will follow a ‘Relate, Encountering and Respecting’ format.
We will also hold a Celebration of the Word for each World Faith to showcase what children have learnt, to celebrate our differences and recognise links and similarities between all World Faiths.
